My Butterfly

Momma told me to write to you today,
but I had no time. New children arrived
with the latest transport, and
I had to play with them.
I didn’t notice time pass.

I live better these days.
I sleep on my own mattress on the floor,
so I will not fall down.
At least I don’t have much work to fix up my bed,
and in the morning I see the sky from my window.

I was coughing a bit, but I don’t want to get sick,
for I am happy when I can run in the courtyard.
Tonight there will be a gathering
like the ones at Scout camp in the summer.

We will sing songs we know,
a girl will play the accordion.
I know you wonder how we fare here,
and you would surely like to be with us now.

And something else, Daddy. Come soon
and have a more cheerful face!
When you are unhappy, Momma is sad,
and then I miss the sparkle in her eyes.

You promised to bring me books
because, truly, I have nothing to read.
So please, come tomorrow, right before dusk.
I will surely be grateful for this.

Now I must stop. Momma sends you her love.
I will rejoice when I hear your footsteps
in the hall. Until you are with us again,
I send you my greetings and kisses.

-Your faithful son.

  1. Nikolas,
Your poem has a fresh, direct meaning that not many others have. You explain exactly why the pictures were on the butterfly, such as the pen symbolizing that writing was a precious thing to the child and how much the child misses his/her father. I also appreciate the images of the camps and grave-sites that you placed below your image. They were very clear and helped me determine the overall situation that this family was in. Good blog.

  2. Nik,
You butterfly was really cool. I liked how you used pictures on the butterfly as well as added color to it. You had a lot of symbolism on your butterfly which was really good. Not everyone had a lot of symbolism but instead more of imagery. The two pictures you added who interesting as well. My favorite part of your project overall was the picture of the child writing the letter you did the poem on. This was my favorite part because it's very interesting to know that this was a letter written by a little boy. By showing a little boy wrote this, you are making it clear to understand why he wrote this letter. Good job!

  3. I really like the silhouette of the boy and your explanation of what it symbolizes. Your interpretation is very clever as well as the picture choices. The poem you were assigned to is very unique. The relationship the boy has with his mother is obviously important and you explained that well in your points. Great job, Nik!
