The Boy Who Dared 2/5/14

Pages 70-115
Prompt: Summarize

It starts off with Helmuth Joining the Hitler Youth program.  He must go to all their meetings and play games like "Capture the Jew"  Helmuth sees no fun and he believes the games to be cruel.  A few months go by and Helmuth has stopped going to the meetings.  The consequence for  this would be a weekend detention, and or  possibly a fine.  Helmuth knows this but continues not to go.  He is later forced to go.  If he does not, he could bring consequences to his family.  He is promoted to the higher group where they play much more violent games.  He feels that the boys like to shed each others blood.

After he stops to go again, his brother Gerhard brings home a shortwave radio.  He and Gerhard both go into the basement and listen until the BBC stops their broadcast.  Afterward Helmuth thinks that the BBC is telling the truth.  He think this not only because they give their own casualties,  but the German casualties as well.  He has always wondered, but know he is really starting to think what else the Nazi are hiding from everybody else.  One night, he decides to tell someone else about the radio.  His friend Karl.  He hurried everybody to bed while he waited for Karl.  When he finally arrived, Helmuth opened the door before Karl had a chance to knock.  Karl did't know why he was there until he saw the radio.  Helmuth explained his theory about the Nazi and the BBC.

Another thing that began Helmuth's thought of what the Nazi were keeping from him, was all the foreign books.  One day while he was at work, he had to take something down to the basement.  Once he carried it down there he found rows upon rows and stacks upon stacks of books.  He knew he should't but he did.  He cracked one open and began to read a German author that hated the Nazi.  The author's voice was so loud, he had to flee Germany.  Helmuth continued reading and then he decided to stop.  Before he was about to put the book back, he slipped it under his shirt and took it home.

  4. I really like how intense this feels. With the dangers of him taking the book home, and the radio could really get him in trouble. He's really rebelling against the cruel and savage like behavior and trying to go against it.
